Today we are going to touch on a rather sensitive topic. Today we talk about anxiety. It is something that almost everyone struggles silently with; It’s something that people battle deep down every time life takes a turn. It is something that most people have to face alone by themselves with no one to turn to because of the fear that they will be judged.

Let’s just take a moment to define just what is anxiety

According to merriam-webster, it is:
a
(1) :  apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or anticipated ill:  a state of being anxious
b :  mentally distressing concern or interest
c :  a strong desire sometimes mixed with doubt, fear, or uneasiness

While it’s normal to have anxiety however it becomes a concern anxiety takes hold over a person’s life till the point where the person becomes worrisome over everything.

It is not abnormal for people to have excessive anxiety. Allot of people fear and doubt in their own reality.

When you think about anxiety, you may picture someone who suffers from panic attacks or crippling self-doubt. There are some subtle signs you struggle with anxiety that may be easy to fly under the radar. Please note, this does not mean that you must have a full-blown anxiety disorder if you happen to bite your fingernails every once in a while.

When it comes to anxiety, sometimes you will feel it in your gut. As noted in Calm Clinic, the same hormones that affect your anxiety can also do a number on your digestive tract. If your persistent stomach issues don’t seem to have any other cause, consider the possibility of anxiety.

Granted, it can be difficult for many people to maintain concentration in the age of smart phones. But according to the Mayo Clinic, finding concentration difficult (or even ‘blanking out’) is one possible sign of an anxiety disorder.

Have trouble sitting still?

According to Anxiety Centre, feeling fidgety or jumpy may be another potential sign of anxiety.

Sure, shyness is nice, but it can also be debilitating. Also, it can be difficult to tell the difference between shyness and a social anxiety disorder. But according to the Social Anxiety Institute, the boundaries of these conditions may overlap, and it’s helpful to work with a professional to determine whether you are coping with extreme shyness or anxiety.

Does your brain sometimes toss out thoughts that are bizarre but difficult to escape? Many people with anxiety have to deal with a mind-bending reality: they know their thoughts are irrational, but are often unable to cut them off, as explained in Everyday Health. Take a walk, ride your bike, go to the gym, participate in martial arts – whatever it takes to release stress. You should engage in a physical hobby which will naturally relieve your anxiety and improve your overall wellness.

Get out of your head by getting outside.

A change of geography, such as a day trip, mini-vacation, or even a walk on the beach can have a positive impact on your mental state.  Fresh air and change of scenery can do wonders. Regardless of whether it is snowing or sunny out, some time spent outside can do you much good and decrease your anxiety levels.

Connect with new and old friends and acquaintances.

There are numerous ways of doing so, ranging from a simple phone call to contacting them through social media.  Reminiscing about old times or planning get-togethers can ease stress and promote joy.

Volunteer.

Helping others will not only benefit others but give you a sense of purpose. By helping those less fortunate, it will make you calmer and feel better.

Eat healthy.

The old adage still holds true, “You are what you eat.”  Being more conscious of the choices you make in dietary intake will increase your energy level and make you more stress- resistant, as you become more mentally fit to tackle the challenges that confront you. The more green and leafy vegetables the better, as those release calming antioxidants and provide essential vitamins that help protect your mental health.

Think “O2E,” which refers to Opposite to Emotion.

Be different and unique

This is a concept from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) which challenges you to do the opposite of what you’re feeling. So, for example, if you normally isolate or sleep to deal with sadness or depression, you are encouraged to engage in behaviors which are more typical of a person who is not sad or depressed. This one takes some imagination and creativity, but it is rooted in the concept that changing your behaviors in turn changes your mental outlook which, in turn, reinforces more proactive behaviors. It’s as if you stepped outside of yourself and created a new reality of what is possible. You are no longer a slave to stress inducing emotions and come to the realization that you can choose how to feel by changing the way you act.

Practice yoga, meditation and/or progressive muscle relaxation.

Yoga combines strengthening and stretching poses with deep breathing and meditation or relaxation. It’s a “total mind-body workout.” It helps reduce stress and anxiety and promote mental and physical stamina. Studies have shown its effectiveness in reducing anxiety and overcoming depression. Progressive muscle relaxation is a technique for learning to monitor and control muscular tension. Daily practice reduces worry, stress and physical ailments, such as stomach and headaches. Being mindful makes one aware of what one is feeling and experiencing in the moment while remaining in a calm, accepting state. Applied relaxation focuses on muscle relaxation and visual cues to maintain that state of calm and acceptance. Yoga and other meditative techniques have proven highly effective in reducing or deactivating the “anticipatory anxiety” normally associated with generalized anxiety disorder.
