How to Cheat at Video Calls On Whatsapp and Get Away with It
Are you looking forward to seeing that special person, attend an online video interview or just chatting with a friend that you want to impress? Do it on Video Calls on WhatsApp
On 5 November 2016, one billion users worldwide will be able to make free video calls on WhatsApp, a popular instant messaging app that is used by many, loved by all! The top rated app has announced that the new video call feature will be widely available on Android, iPhone, and even Windows devices “shortly.”
However, there is a resounding question that keeps popping up!
“How do I look good on Video Calls on WhatsApp?”
Here are some seriously useful insider tips for you!
Good Lighting is the Key
Have you ever tried to video call with the window at your back? I wouldn’t because it would make you look like a dark blob (which is not good, just in case you thought if you should have that dark bobbing effect). Try to avoid overhead light because it creates dark shadows– especially underneath your eyes—that even all concealers in the world cannot help fix that.
Do you know people go on dates at romantic candlelit café or restaurants? It’s because everyone looks so much enhanced in a flattering light, and significant dates are good for restaurants. Good lighting is just as important for WhatsApp dates– or any video, for that matter.
- Online Dates: 5/5 (Clarity creates trust and transparency)
- Interviews: 4/5 (Brightness and clarity show that you are not afraid to come on out)
- Casual Chats: 4/5 (I mean, it would be good if the other person can see you right? Unless you want to be part of the “dark side”)
Clothes and Presentation
When I was young, my father always advised me on how to dress well and even helped picked my outfits. As I grew older, I realized how valuable this advice was. For interviews, it is wise to choose to wear bright, professional clothing– even if you’re calling right from your bedroom! Should you be applying for a secretarial position, wear something business-like and professional, with little to no accessories and light touches of make-up.
For most video calls, the viewer would only be able to see the top half of your body, so try to pay more attention to the upper part of your body. Remember, warm colors look better on camera than dull, shiny, reflective or too-bright colors. Just treat the video call interview like a real-life interview, and you will do just fine.
So it is with dating and casual! It doesn’t matter if you wear your boxers or PJ’s on your bottom half, but do put on a good top so that the other person will have a lasting impression. If you decide to go shirtless, that’s up to you too but please do it at your discretion and spare us the details 😉
You have the opportunity to set the stage, so to speak, when it comes to video calls. Try to take the call in a clean, neat room or an outdoor area.
If it’s an interview, you should prepare notes to help you answer questions or provide more information about individual topics. Keep important documents at hand because it’s rude to make the caller wait while you search for them. Also, try considering wearing a jacket/ blazer if it’s for an interview. You will look better on camera, particularly for men. A blazer or jacket makes you look more professional and more authoritative.
Ladies: Makeup can be good too! Just remember to apply the right amount of make-up. I have heard countless of comments made from guys or other women on the “thickness” of the makeup of the person they are video conferencing with. Remember, reasonable makeup balance is the key.
- Online Dates: 5/5 (Look to kill and impress!)
- Interviews: 5/5 (Look smart, presentable and professional during an online video interview session. First impressions always count)
- Casual Chats: 1/5 (Casual chit-chats are supposed to be “casual” – keep it that way!)
Give 100% + 10%
Take a chill pill and relax! Start to think to yourself “It’s a beautiful, joyful day!”, Smile and drive in to engage with your interviewer. Never underestimate the 10% because it makes you look excellent from the other side, but be careful not to over-act or you will appear fake and insecure.
- Online Dates: 4/5 (If your not doing this for your partner, it shows how much value you have for them)
- Interviews: 5/5 (Always, always give your best for an interview!)
- Casual Chats: 1/5 (Again, keep casual chats are supposed to be about causal random stuff…unless if there is gossip. Gossip needs 120%)
Other Helpful Tips:
Look Good Police says NO to Stripes:
Large full stripes are ok; Houndstooth is not. It’s not really a #fashion “NO-NO” but a technical one. Stripes may cause aliasing on certain cameras. Stripes may fool the sensor, almost like one of that psychedelic images where the spiral never seems to end. This may cause flicker and move lines in the background of your image. Just stick to simple strong, colors, and you’ll be alright.
Silhouette are not always sexy!
Amateurs always seem to make this error by standing front of the window during a video voice call or even a video shoot. If you are going to do that, at least have a light source to illuminate your face. Why so? The whole reason for a video voice call is to see the physical reactions of the person on the other end so that there will be emotions and feelings are invoked during the conversation. Well, of course, you can probably skip this if you plan to be a creepy stalker or an anonymous secret caller (if this is you, please remember to never video call me – ever).
Allot of people tend to do this in an enclosed area, especially when there is a spectacular view behind them. Your well-meaning intentions will create a silhouette of you on camera.
The Shorter, The better you build the conversation:
Winston Churchill once said these famous words: “If I ‘d had more time I would have written a shorter letter.” Yes, that what he said and you should too. Conversations and dialogs are always a 2-way thing. Explaining further may cut off your rapport with the other person, and in the end, it may bore the other person because they feel that they have nothing to contribute to the conversation and may even feel the dialog to be one sided.
Being on video means you can fully extend your vocal expressions to physical actions which may trigger better understanding and rapport (connectivity of the heart)
Most people don’t know this but standing up during a video call has lots of benefits. Firstly, your audience will have an automatic impression that you seem to have more energy through their viewing screen. You will be able to breath will be better, and your posture allows a good frame shot of your face as you dialogue.
No Slouching! It totally leads to an impression that you are very sleepy, lack of energy and even disinterest from the conversation.
Now with these tips, you are ready for your next video call! In fact, it doesn’t have to be WhatsApp Video calls, but even facetime, skype and facebook chat.
How do you get the WhatsApp Video Call feature?
“When you receive the WhatsApp app update with the video calling feature, you can try it out by tapping on the call icon at the top right corner of a chat. Tapping on the “video call” option starts up a video chat with that WhatsApp contact. If you have not received the app update yet, then WhatsApp will only make a phone call to that contact instead of presenting you with both options

Note that we advise that you wait for the WhatsApp video calling feature to show up on your phone since that also helps the server load manageable. But if you are convinced you to want to start video calls right now, follow these steps.
